"Hmm?" He was bent over her, the warmth of his body soothing her as he lifted her with one arm and stripped the cover back on the bed, then settled her between the sheets. His mouth feathered over her breasts, barely touching the silk that covered them.
Incredible waves of relaxation were sweeping over her. "You can't make love to me," she managed to whisper. "Not yet."
"I know, sweetheart," he murmured, his deep voice low and hypnotic. "Go to sleep. We have plenty of time."
Her lashes fluttered down, and with a slow, deep sigh she went to sleep. Derek straightened, looking down at her. His body throbbed with the need for sexual relief, but a faint, tender smile curved his lips as he watched her. She had called it "sex" before, but this time she had said "make love." She was losing her wariness, though she still seemed to have no idea why he had married her. Did she think she was so totally without charm or appeal? Did she truly think he'd married her only because of Risa? He'd done his best to convince her that he was attracted to her, but the final argument would have to wait about five weeks longer.
Her thick lashes made dark fans on her cheeks, just as Risa's did. He wanted to lie down beside her and hold her while she slept. He'd known she was tired; since Risa's birth, Kathleen had been sleeping a great deal, as if she had been pushing herself far too hard for far too long. Her body was insisting on catching up on its healing rest now that she no longer had such a pressing need to do everything herself.
The telephone in the living room rang, but he'd had the foresight to unplug the phone by the bed, so Kathleen slept on undisturbed. Quickly he left the room, closing the door behind him, and picked up the other extension.
"Derek, is she asleep yet?" Sarah's warm voice held a certain amusement, as if she had known he would somehow have gotten Kathleen to take a nap by now.
He grinned. Sarah knew him even better than his mother, better than anyone else in the world, except perhaps Claire. Claire saw into people, but she was so quiet it was easy to underestimate her perception.
"She didn't think she needed a nap, but she went to sleep as soon as she lay down."
"Somehow, I never doubted it. Anyway, I've had an idea. Now that I've opened up the other store, I need to hire someone else. Do you think Kathleen would be interested? Erica is going to manage the new store, so I thought Kathleen could work with me, and she'd be able to have the baby with her."
Leave it to Sarah to notice that Kathleen needed a friend, as well as the measure of independence the job would give her while she adjusted to being his wife.
"She'll probably jump at it, but it'll be a couple of weeks before she's able to drive, and at least that long before Risa will be strong enough.
